With 32, 000 employees and sales of nearly €4 billion in 1998, the Faurecia Group quickly established itself at the forefront of automotive seat manufacturing in Europe. It went on to gain a solid foothold in the market for exhaust systems in the United States by acquiring US company AP Automotive Systems.
In 2000, it acquired Sommer Allibert, a company created in the 1980s through a merger between Alfred Sommer (vehicle floor coverings) and Allibert (molded plastic parts).
Faurecia today
With 320 sites including 30 R&D centers in 34 countries around the world, Faurecia is now a global leader in its four areas of business: automotive seating, interior systems, automotive exteriors and emissions control technologies. Faurecia is the world’s number one supplier of seat frames and mechanisms, emissions control technologies and vehicle interiors. The Group is also the world’s third-largest supplier of complete seat systems and is Europe’s leading name in automotive exteriors.
Faurecia has strengthened its position in each of these areas through a series of acquisitions. In 2010, it became world leader in emissions control technologies by acquiring exhaust specialist Emcon Technologies. In Europe, it expanded its range of automotive exterior and bodywork solutions by absorbing Plastal’s business interests in Spain and Germany in 2010, followed by the company’s operations in France in 2012.
Faurecia opened 3 new plants in 2013. It now draws on a network of 36 production sites in the country and is set to maintain its growth. The Group also has state-of-the-art TechCenters in Minbei and Shanghai, home to its full range of R&D expertise, covering everything from initial CAD to prototype testing.
In South Korea, Faurecia’s growth is buoyed by close relations with Korean automaker Hyundai-Kia. The Group already has three Emissions Control Technologies sites in the country.
In Thailand, Faurecia Emissions Control Technologies is already well established and the Group continues to grow, as reflected by the recent introduction of Faurecia Interior Systems.
In India, Faurecia continues to expand its industrial base for three Business Groups: Emissions Control Technologies, Interior Systems and Automotive Seating. This campaign is now backed by the Pune TechCenter, which provides the full range of R&D expertise needed to develop local and international programs.
Faurecia’s rapid expansion continues apace in North America. As of late 2012, the Group had opened 15 new sites in the United States, Mexico and Canada in scarcely two years, nearly doubling its workforce in the region.
